The examination will include an extensive clinical joint and muscle assessment and also a CT- scan analysis and MRI –analysis if indicated. The TM – joints are a complex joint joined together by the lower jaw. Balance and alignment between both TM joints and the teeth and associated muscles is of the utmost importance for a happy functional chewing and speaking process. Wear on teeth or joints will affect the balance and alignment between these components with associated muscle pain and possible joint pain and tooth ache. Bruxism (clenching and grinding) is often one of the causes of jaw joint and muscle pain. Treatment of headaches and jaw joint and muscle pain might include very conservative treatment with bite plates and occlusal appliances combined with patient educations and regular follow up treatment or might include more extensive partial or full occlusal reconstructions in severe cases.
