DENTAL IMPLANTS
Dental implants are artificial titanium roots that are implanted into the jaw bone in order to simulate a tooth root and support a dental crown. The dental implant fixture will be inserted into the jaw bone and usually needs a healing period (osseointegration period) of 3 months before loaded with an implant-supported crown. In some situations, implants can be loaded with implant-supported provisional prostheses immediately after the implant fixture placement procedure. Dental implants can support a single crown or multiple crowns or dentures and can support partial occlusal reconstructions or full occlusal reconstructions.
Even though improvements in dental care, most people experience tooth loss which may be due to tooth decay, periodontal disease, or injury. Dental implants help provide a strong foundation for permanent or removable replacement of teeth that match your natural teeth. Implants may be indicated if:
- One or more teeth are missing
- There is adequate bone to secure the dental implant or are able to get a bone graft
- You are unable to wear conventional dentures
- You want to improve your speech
- There are no underlying conditions that can affect bone healing
People who are heavy smokers, patients who have previously had radiation therapy to the neck or head, and people who are living with chronic diseases such as diabetes or heart disease, will first be evaluated whether they can get dental implants or not. During the procedure, Dr Bester or an oral surgeon will place a tooth root implant made of titanium into the bone socket of the missing tooth. Another appointment will be made after the jawbone heals. During the healing process, the jawbone grows around the dental implant. After the dental implant has integrated (bonded to the jawbone), an impression will be made of your mouth and remaining teeth which will be used to make the artificial tooth called the implant-supported crown or bridge or prosthesis.
